EIC Pathfinder Challenge 2026: Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing

EU funding for early-stage, high-risk biotechnology projects

European society is ageing. This is increasing the need for solutions that help people live healthier, more independent lives in later years, from medical and technological innovations to broader societal approaches. For biotech, pharma and MedTech companies, as well as research organisations, healthy ageing is therefore no longer just a research topic. It is becoming a market with significant medical, social and economic potential.

Through the EIC Pathfinder Challenge 2026 “Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing, the European Union supports early-stage, high-risk projects that advance biotechnological approaches to age-related diseases.

The Challenge is particularly relevant for organisations aiming to further develop and validate a scientifically robust biotech idea with clear breakthrough potential.

Funding framework at a glance

  • Funding instrument: EIC Pathfinder Challenge
  • Topic: Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing
  • Funding volume: typically up to EUR 4 million per project
  • Funding rate: 100% of eligible costs
  • Submission deadline: 28 October 2026
  • Suitable for: biotech, pharma, MedTech, longevity companies, research organisations, spin-offs and deep-tech consortia

Funded projects may also benefit from additional EIC services, including:

  • Business Acceleration Services
  • Access to investors
  • Strategic guidance throughout the project as part of the EIC portfolio
  • Potential follow-on opportunities, such as the EIC Accelerator

Why healthy ageing matters now

Research into ageing processes has made significant progress in recent years. At the same time, translating scientific insights into practical applications remains challenging.

Ageing processes are biologically complex, regulatory requirements are demanding, and many approaches fail during validation along the value chain. In the early stages of development, a scientifically compelling idea alone is not enough. What matters is whether that idea can be translated into a credible route towards application, validation and future scale-up.

The EIC Pathfinder Challenge is looking for projects that go beyond incremental improvements and can create new technological foundations for future applications.

This is a highly competitive Challenge. Applicants need to demonstrate that their idea goes beyond conventional biotech development while presenting a credible pathway towards validation, regulatory approval and future exploitation. A particularly critical question will be whether the proposed approach truly opens up a new way of addressing age-related diseases — or simply places known technologies in a healthy ageing context.

Three innovation areas in focus

The Challenge targets disruptive projects in one of the following areas:

1. Therapeutic and preventive interventions

The call seeks new biotechnological or pharmaceutical approaches that contribute to the prevention, delay or potential reversal of age-related diseases. What matters is not only the medical need, but also a clear mechanism of action and a convincing scientific rationale.

2. Biomarkers and data-driven tools

Another focus lies on biomarkers, molecular profiling approaches and data-driven tools that enable a personalised assessment of ageing processes. These approaches can help identify risks earlier, target interventions more precisely and improve understanding of the progression of age-related changes.

3. New Approach Methodologies

Innovative preclinical models and New Approach Methodologies, such as organoids, in vitro systems or AI-supported approaches, are also in scope. They can accelerate development and validation processes and help reduce or replace animal testing.

Across all areas, the objective is to achieve a convincing proof of concept, typically progressing towards TRL 3 to 4.

What makes this EIC Pathfinder Challenge different

The EIC Pathfinder differs significantly from many traditional funding programmes. Funded projects are not viewed in isolation but are integrated into a thematic portfolio.

Under the leadership of the EIC Programme Manager, projects contribute to joint activities — for example on scientific and technological questions, market potential, regulation, ethics and societal impact.

For applicants, this is more than a formal programme element. By addressing market, regulatory and exploitation aspects early on, projects can improve their chances of future market entry and scale-up. This makes it particularly important to show clearly in the proposal how the project will contribute to the overall portfolio.

Success factors for a competitive proposal

Based on our experience with EIC proposals, four aspects are particularly important:

  • A clear breakthrough beyond the current state of the art
  • A convincing proof-of-concept logic
  • A strong link between scientific excellence, application potential and European added value
  • Early consideration of market, regulatory, ethical and exploitation aspects

Assess early, prepare strategically

Although the submission deadline is not until October 2026, it is worth assessing the fit with the EIC Pathfinder Challenge at an early stage. The key question is not only whether a project fits the healthy ageing theme. It must also be clear where the technological novelty lies, how the proof of concept will be achieved and what European added value the approach offers.

Initial steps include:

  • Mapping the project idea against the three Challenge areas
  • Defining the intended proof-of-concept objective
  • Identifying the strongest differentiator of the proposed approach
  • Clarifying the expected route towards application and scale-up
  • Assessing how the project could contribute to the wider EIC portfolio

The earlier these points are clarified, the more effectively the proposal strategy can be developed.
