From autonomy to sustainability: advancing autonomous shipping in Europe

PNO (formerly CiaoTech) shares insights from the AUTOSHIP project on the future of zero-emission maritime transport.

What is AUTOSHIP?

AUTOSHIP (Autonomous Shipping Initiative for European Waters) is an EU-funded project focused on accelerating the transition toward the next generation of autonomous ships. The project aims to build and operate two different autonomous vessels, demonstrating their operational capabilities in Short Sea Shipping and Inland Waterways scenarios, with an emphasis on improving goods mobility across Europe.

A closer look at the road to sustainable autonomy

In a newly published article, Marco Molica Colella, project coordinator from PNO (formerly CiaoTech, part of PNO Group), explores the future of autonomous shipping and how it can contribute to more sustainable maritime logistics.

The article appears in the latest issue of the Open Access Government journal and outlines key activities within the AUTOSHIP project. These include stakeholder and market analyses, a cost-benefit analysis for autonomous vessel use cases, and the development of business and exploitation plans to guide future deployment.

Supporting innovation in logistics and transport

AUTOSHIP combines technology development with real-world testing and strategic planning. The insights from the project contribute not only to automation but also to broader EU goals around sustainability, safety, and competitiveness in the transport sector.
