The European Commission has officially launched the LIFE 2026 Calls for Proposals, opening a new chapter in one of the EU’s most influential funding programmes for environment and climate action. With billions in funding and a legacy spanning more than three decades, the LIFE Programme continues to position itself as a cornerstone of Europe’s green transition, while offering organisations across the continent a powerful platform to turn sustainability ambitions into tangible impact.
At a time when we face escalating climate risks, biodiversity loss, and resource pressures, the LIFE Programme stands out as a catalyst for systemic change. Its bottom-up approach empowers organisations to develop solutions tailored to local challenges, while ensuring European-wide relevance and scalability.
In essence, LIFE bridges the gap between policy ambition and practical implementation. It enables innovators, cities, and industries to not only adapt to environmental challenges but actively shape the transition toward a climate-neutral, resource-efficient future.
Since its inception in 1992, the LIFE Programme has co-financed thousands of projects tackling some of Europe’s most pressing environmental and climate challenges. Today, under the 5.4 billion EUR LIFE 2021–2027 framework, the programme plays a critical role in implementing EU environmental and climate policy and driving innovation on the ground.
The newly launched 2026 calls reaffirm this mission. They target four key sub-programmes:
Together, these pillars reflect the EU’s integrated approach to sustainability, recognizing that biodiversity protection, resource efficiency, energy transition and decarbonization must go hand in hand.
What sets LIFE apart is its focus on real-world implementation. Rather than funding pure research, the programme supports pilot, demonstration, and large-scale deployment projects that bring environmental solutions into everyday practice.
From restoring ecosystems and improving air quality to accelerating energy-efficient buildings and supporting circular business models, LIFE-funded initiatives help translate European Green Deal ambitions into measurable outcomes.
The 2026 calls continue this emphasis, with funding streams for Standard Action Projects, Strategic Integrated Projects, and Clean Energy Transition initiatives, among others.
Crucially, the LIFE Programme is open to a broad spectrum of applicants: businesses, NGOs, public authorities, and research institutions alike. It is an opportunity to:
With most application deadlines set for September 2026, organisations now have a clear timeframe to develop strong, impactful proposals.
