ERC Grants 2027: How to Assess Whether Your Proposal Is Ready

With several ERC 2027 calls approaching, now is a good time for researchers to assess whether their proposal is sufficiently mature for submission. While the specific requirements differ between ERC grant schemes, the fundamental question is the same: is the research idea ambitious, mature and compelling enough to submit?

A competitive ERC proposal requires more than a strong scientific idea. It needs a clear research vision, a convincing articulation of the breakthrough, a coherent project design and a strong fit between the Principal Investigator and the proposed work.

In practice, many proposal weaknesses emerge before the writing phase. If the core concept is not sufficiently developed, if the scientific advance is not visible, or if the methodology does not clearly support the ambition, the proposal may struggle to convince evaluators even if the underlying research is excellent.

Before drafting the full proposal, applicants should therefore assess whether the project is conceptually ready.

What does ERC proposal readiness mean?

Proposal readiness is not only about having enough time to write. It is about whether the project is sufficiently mature to be evaluated as a competitive ERC application.

A proposal may be technically well structured and still lack readiness if:

  • the breakthrough is not immediately visible;
  • the project reads as incremental rather than frontier research;
  • the objectives, methodology and expected scientific advance are not fully aligned;
  • the Principal Investigator’s profile is not clearly connected to the ambition of the project;
  • the proposal narrative does not guide evaluators through the scientific logic.

ERC proposals are assessed on scientific excellence. This means that the project must show both ambition and credibility. Evaluators need to understand why the research matters, why it is timely, why the applicant is the right person to lead it, and why the proposed approach can deliver the promised scientific advance.

1. Research vision: what will become possible?

A strong ERC proposal should be built around a clear research vision.

A useful test is the following question:

What will become possible after this project that is impossible today?

If the answer is difficult to formulate, the proposal may not yet communicate its ambition clearly enough.

The research vision should explain more than the topic of the project. It should clarify the scientific challenge, the gap in current understanding and the new possibilities that the project aims to open.

For ERC evaluators, this distinction matters. A proposal that describes a relevant research area is not necessarily a proposal that demonstrates frontier research potential.

2. Groundbreaking nature: is the breakthrough visible?

ERC applications are expected to go beyond excellent science. They should demonstrate a level of ambition that advances the frontier of knowledge.

One recurring issue in ERC proposals is that the novelty is present, but not sufficiently visible. Applicants may understand the breakthrough very well, but evaluators should not have to search for it.

The proposal should make clear from the beginning:

  • how the project goes beyond the current state of the art;
  • whether the approach challenges existing assumptions or paradigms;
  • what scientific possibilities the project could open;
  • why the proposed research is more than an incremental development.

Many proposals explain what will be done. Stronger proposals explain what will become possible if the research succeeds.

3. Principal Investigator: why this applicant?

ERC evaluation does not focus only on the project. It also considers the Principal Investigator’s intellectual capacity, creativity and ability to carry out the proposed research.

This is especially relevant for Starting Grant applicants, who need to demonstrate potential for research independence.

A strong proposal should make clear:

  • why the applicant is the right person to lead the project;
  • how the track record supports the proposed ambition;
  • where the applicant has demonstrated intellectual leadership;
  • how the project fits into the applicant’s scientific trajectory.

The CV and track record should not function only as a list of outputs. They should support the narrative of scientific independence, originality and capacity to deliver the proposed research.

4. Project narrative: can evaluators follow the logic?

ERC proposals are read by evaluators with different degrees of proximity to the applicant’s specific field. The proposal must therefore be technically rigorous while remaining clear enough for a broader expert audience.

A coherent narrative should guide the reader from:

  • the scientific challenge;
  • to the research opportunity;
  • to the proposed breakthrough;
  • to the methodological approach;
  • to the expected scientific advance.

If the central message changes across sections, or if the research questions, objectives and methodology appear disconnected, the proposal becomes harder to evaluate.

Clarity is not a stylistic detail. In ERC proposals, clarity is part of scientific positioning.

5. Project design: does the structure support the ambition?

A competitive ERC proposal needs a project design that reinforces the scientific vision.

The research question, objectives, methodology and work packages should all point towards the same overarching ambition. If work packages look like separate mini-projects, the proposal may appear fragmented.

Applicants should check whether:

  • the methodology can deliver the promised scientific advance;
  • the work packages reflect the scientific logic of the project;
  • the objectives are not simply a list of activities;
  • Part B1 clearly communicates the vision and ambition;
  • Part B2 provides confidence in feasibility and implementation.

The relationship between ambition and feasibility is particularly important. A proposal should be ambitious enough to be ERC-relevant, but sufficiently well designed to convince evaluators that the work can be delivered.

6. Evaluator perspective: does the proposal create confidence?

A useful preparation exercise is to read the proposal from the evaluator’s perspective.

Evaluators need to quickly understand:

  • what the project is about;
  • why it matters;
  • why it is ambitious;
  • why the applicant is well positioned;
  • how the project will be delivered.

A strong ERC proposal should create both excitement and confidence. Part B1 should make the scientific vision and breakthrough potential clear. Part B2 should demonstrate that the methodology, resources and implementation plan are credible.

When should ERC applicants start preparing?

There is no single preparation timeline that applies to every applicant. However, strong ERC proposals are rarely developed at the last minute.

A typical preparation process may include:

6–12 months before the deadline
Develop the core idea, test the breakthrough potential and gather early feedback.

3–6 months before the deadline
Draft the proposal narrative, refine the project positioning and align ambition with feasibility.

2–3 months before the deadline
Stress-test the proposal, identify weaknesses and improve clarity, consistency and evaluator orientation.

This is often the most effective stage to seek external feedback, as there is still sufficient time to implement meaningful improvements

Final weeks
Focus on refinement, formatting, consistency checks and submission preparation. At this stage, major conceptual changes are difficult to implement.
