BIOSPAIN 2026: From healthcare innovation to real-world adoption

BIOSPAIN 2026 brought together Europe’s biotechnology and life sciences ecosystem in Bilbao from 29 September to 1 October. For us at PNO Innovation, it was an opportunity to connect with innovators, explore emerging opportunities across the bioeconomy and address one of the most pressing challenges facing European healthcare innovation: how to turn promising technologies into solutions that reach the market and benefit patients.

Throughout the event, we contributed to discussions on precision fermentation, circular value chains and the future of bioinnovation. But one conversation raised a particularly important question about Europe’s ability to translate its innovation potential into real-world impact.

From fundable to adoptable: Europe’s healthcare innovation challenge

During BIOSPAIN, we hosted a closed-door breakfast bringing together senior voices from the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem to discuss the barriers facing European healthcare innovation.

Europe has made significant progress in strengthening its biotechnology ecosystem, research capabilities and access to innovation funding. Yet promising healthcare technologies still face considerable obstacles on their journey towards commercialisation and adoption.

What happens after an innovation has secured funding and demonstrated its technological potential?

This question was central to our discussion. Participants explored how regulatory complexity, certification requirements and fragmented healthcare markets can make the transition from development to commercial adoption particularly challenging.

One important insight emerged: Europe’s challenge is increasingly about ensuring that the innovations it develops and finances can actually reach healthcare systems and patients.

The conversation also raised questions about how Europe can maintain rigorous standards for safety and quality while making market-access pathways clearer and more predictable for innovative companies.

We have brought together the key insights and conclusions from this discussion in our new BIOSPAIN 2026 report.

Connecting innovation across the bioeconomy

Throughout BIOSPAIN, our stand became a meeting point for conversations spanning life sciences and health, agri-food, industrial biotechnology, circular bioeconomy and blueconomy.

Through our interactive wall, “What’s next in Bioinnovation and where does your project fit?”, we invited visitors to share their perspectives on emerging innovation priorities and position their own projects within the evolving bioeconomy landscape.

The initiative encouraged discussions around sustainable food systems, bio-based products, biomass valorisation, bioprocesses, healthcare innovation and marine resources.

These conversations reinforced the importance of connecting technological development with the wider ecosystems, partnerships and funding opportunities needed to bring innovation forward.

Two conversations shaping the future of bioinnovation

On 30 September, we also contributed to the BIOSPAIN conference programme through two sessions addressing important challenges for the bioeconomy.

Unlocking Opportunities in Precision Fermentation for the Food Industry

Moderated by Francesco Sottile, this session explored the opportunities surrounding precision fermentation and its potential role in the future of food innovation. As new technologies create opportunities for more sustainable food production, the discussion provided a space to consider how innovation can progress towards industrial application.

Circularity at Scale: The 2030 Value Chain Challenge

Lara Valentín, Team Leader Circular Bioeconomy, participated as a speaker in this session focused on circularity and the challenges of developing sustainable value chains at scale. Both sessions reflected an important priority for the sector: connecting promising technologies and sustainable innovation with the conditions needed for successful implementation.

Continuing the conversation beyond BIOSPAIN

BIOSPAIN 2026 highlighted the breadth of innovation taking place across Europe’s life sciences and bioeconomy ecosystem, as well as the challenges involved in translating that potential into real-world applications.

For healthcare innovators in particular, the journey from promising technology to successful adoption requires more than access to funding. It also depends on strategic planning, collaboration and a clear understanding of the regulatory and market environment.

We work with organisations to connect innovation strategy, public funding and the partnerships needed to move promising ideas forward. If you are developing a healthcare or biotechnology innovation and exploring how to strengthen its funding strategy or route towards market adoption, we would be happy to continue the conversation.
