Themes and associated budgets

IHI Call 12 focuses on boosting innovation:

1. for a better understanding of the determinants of health (budget 30 million euros)
2. through better integration of fragmented health R&I efforts (60 million euros)
3. for people-centered integrated healthcare solutions (20 million euros)
4. through exploitation of digitalization and data exchange in healthcare (43.3 million euros )
5. for better assessment of the added value of innovative integrated healthcare solutions (9.8 million euros).

This is a so-called single-stage call for applications. At least 45% of the eligible costs must be covered by sector members, project partners, or affiliated entities.

Our advice? Start preparing now

IHI grants are intended for large-scale and groundbreaking collaborative projects in the medical and life sciences sector. Competition between proposals is fierce, so our advice is to start preparing in good time. Some suggestions:

• Filter existing research or innovation proposals in your organization to see if they match one of the five grant themes mentioned above – our IHI specialists can help you with this.
• Form a strong international consortium in good time (this must consist of at least three partners from different EU or associated countries) – make use of PNO’s extensive network if necessary.
• Although applications in previous calls had to be submitted in two stages, this new call is a ‘single-stage’ call, which means that a complete proposal must be submitted in one go. This also means that there is no time to lose in setting up your application!

Background of the IHI program

The Innovative Health Initiative is a European subsidy program that is of interest to innovation-focused collaborative projects involving parties such as medical research institutions, health technology companies, hospitals, and patient organizations. Project proposals submitted under IHI call 12 must comply with the principles of the IHI:

• they must address an unmet need in the field of public health;
• only accessible to large-scale and cross-sector public-private partnerships;
• they must have clearly defined impacts on society, the economy, and science;
• fit within the pre-competitive nature of IHI projects;
• and contribute to the competitiveness of the EU.
