Four projects granted PCI/PMI status for cross-border energy projects

Advantages of PCI/PMI-status

With this PCI or PMI status, which is the equivalent of the CB RES (Cross-Border Renewable Energy) status, the projects on the list can benefit from accelerated permitting and regulatory processes for faster implementation and delivery. They will also be eligible for funding through, for example, the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) grant, which is intended to strengthen energy connections between member states. Focus lies on supporting electricity, hydrogen, and CO₂ networks.

Next CEF-budget likely doubled

In the coming years, the budget of the CEF Energy fund will increase significantly. Between 2028 and 2034, the European Commission will make a total of 29.9 billion euros available to invest in strengthening the connections between member states’ energy networks. In the last multiannual budget (2021-2027), that total amount was “only” 5.84 billion euros.

Many new applicants expected for upcoming CEF call

PNO Innovation successfully supported four of these multi-stakeholder projects under this second list. As this is the entry ticket to apply for CEF funding, many new applicants are expected to make use of this CEF fund for the upcoming call in April 2026. The deadline for submission under this new call is expected in September 2026, aiming to support both study activities, as well as the construction and realization of cross-border energy networks.
