At a recent Carbon Capture Summit in Amsterdam, stakeholders from across the ecosystem, financiers, engineers, infrastructure operators, policy makers and technology providers, shared a clear conclusion:

• Large-scale CCUS deployment is essential to meet EU climate targets.
• Yet every link of the value chain (capture, transport and storage) faces regulatory, financial and coordination hurdles.
• Bridging the gap between fundability and bankability requires more than access to grants. It requires anticipation, partnership, credibility and quantified impact.

The 4 keys to CCUS project funding

Based on our experience supporting complex decarbonisation projects, four elements consistently determine whether a project secures funding and reaches financial close:

1. Anticipation. Choose the right instrument at the right maturity stage.
2. Partnership. Demonstrate full value chain integration, capture, transport and storage.
3. Credibility. Provide operational realism, quantified data and robust governance.
4. Impact. Substantiate environmental, financial and market impact with measurable KPIs.

Most projects don’t fail because they lack ambition, but because these elements are not fully aligned.
