Enabling scientists and innovators to improve health for all
Two-thirds of all deaths in Europe result from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mental health conditions. The mortality and morbidity related to NCDs are expected to increase with the ageing population, and due to increased exposure to relevant disease risk factors. This leads to preventable human suffering, significant societal costs, and an increasing demand for healthcare.
While there has been progress in reducing the global disease burden from several communicable diseases, including tuberculosis and vaccine-preventable infections like hepatitis B and polio, infectious diseases continue to be of great concern to global health. Re-emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, and the steady rise of antimicrobial resistant pathogens highlight the urgent need for a ‘One Health’ approach, which recognizes that the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems are interconnected. Planetary health research can provide valuable insights for preventing and managing NCDs and infectious diseases by studying how environmental changes, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and water scarcity, influence the occurrence and spread of these diseases.
Addressing these multifactorial challenges therefore requires coordinated and multisectoral actions to prevent and control them, integrating health, food, biodiversity, and climate considerations.
In response to these pressing needs, the European Commission (EC) is building the European Health Union. Central to this initiative is the European Health Data Space (EHDS), along with key actions focused on pandemic preparedness, cancer, mental health, and pharmaceutical legislation. The Farm to Fork Strategy outlines ambitious goals for agro-food systems that are fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly, aiming to accelerate the transition to a sustainable value chain.
To effectively address health crises, EU countries and innovators require support to ensure medical supplies are available, affordable, and innovative. Collaboration is essential to enhance personalized prevention, treatments, and aftercare for various diseases.
