Interreg VI

Improving the effectiveness of regional development policies and programs through interregional cooperation

Interreg VI is a European Territorial Cooperation key instrument of the European Union. This European Union initiative aims to improve the effectiveness of regional development policies and programs through interregional cooperation. It focuses on sharing solutions and exchanging experiences to enhance policy implementation and address common challenges across Europe.

Objective of the funding
Interreg VI aims to stimulate innovative cooperation between (border) regions, to make Europe smarter and greener and to reduce economic differences between regions. The funding encourages knowledge sharing, policy learning, and the transfer of good practices among European regions. Examples include projects in the field of (eco-)innovation, sustainable energy and efficient use of resources.

Interreg grant programs
Interreg provides grants from a number of programs, each with a specific objective. The programs are subdivided by the size of the cooperation area and by regions in Europe. For the 2021-2027 period, Interreg has been divided into several strands, each focusing on different types of regional cooperation:

  • Cross-Border Cooperation (Interreg A): supports cooperation between border regions
  • Transnational Cooperation (Interreg B): involves regions from several countries forming larger areas
  • Interregional Cooperation (Interreg C): enhances the effectiveness of Cohesion Policy
  • Outermost Regions Cooperation (Interreg D): focuses on cooperation involving the EU’s outermost regions
  • Interreg IPA CBC: supports cross-border cooperation between EU Member States and candidate or potential candidate countries
  • Interreg NEXT: implements programs at the EU’s external borders
