Federal Fund for Industry and Climate Action (BIK)

Federal fund for industry and climate action supports SMEs in decarbonization

The Federal Funding for Industry and Climate Protection (BIK) is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. The program is open to all sectors and technologies and is intended to help initiate small and medium-sized transformation projects on the path to climate-neutral production.

One such transformation project could, for example, be the conversion of high-temperature processes from fossil fuels to electricity as an energy source.

Funding starts at a project size of €500,000 for SMEs and €1 million for large companies.

Two BIK support modules

BIK includes two funding modules.

Module 1 is suitable for companies aiming to reduce at least 40% of their CO₂ emissions in production—either through investment in innovative technologies or through a research project.

This funding module targets companies in the energy-intensive basic materials industry, such as:

  • the chemical base materials industry,
  • the steel and foundry industry,
  • the glass and ceramics industry,
  • the paper and pulp industry,
  • the cement and lime industry.

The maximum funding in Module 1 is up to €200 million per company.

Module 2 supports investment and innovation projects related to:

  • Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), and
  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

However, funding is limited to projects addressing hard-to-avoid CO₂ emissions. This aligns BIK Module 2 with the key points of the German Federal Government’s Carbon Management Strategy.

Is your project eligible?

Funding requirements for Module 1:

  • Climate protection contribution: The project must directly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Use of technology: Existing climate-friendly technologies for improving energy efficiency or achieving decarbonization must be used.
  • Economic viability: The measure must make economic sense for the company.

Funding requirements for Module 2:

  • Investments in new climate-friendly technologies: Use of innovative technologies..
  • Pilot and demonstration projects: Testing of new processes that contribute to decarbonization and emission reduction.
  • Proof of practical applicability: Long-term use in industrial operations.
  • Climate protection contribution: The project must make a clear contribution to climate protection.
